already December

30th November - 1st December

A picture of Węgrzynów sent by my sister:

who is celebrating her birthday today!!!

Other participant's AAD Theme reports are gradually available to read. For me the idea of 'group work' triggers the following words in response: sharing, support, acceleration, privilege, enrichment, opportunity, nourishment ... Hmmm, these are 'only' words, still, there's some actual experience behind them.

Happy birthday Ania & Heike!

more frost

29th-30th November, Saturday -> Sunday

Walk home after the night shift and the town is coated with the frost/snow again - huray for that! There's a definite Sunday feel around, it's very quiet - something to enjoy!

It was supposed to be a 'time off' after the work today, but because of the last minute extra night shift tonight, and another one on Monday, it will happen later, perhaps late on Tuesday evening, or Wednesday... Good!

zzz...zzz...

sky-blue canvas

FRIDAY/SATURDAY
28&29/11/08
Harrogate - North Yorkshire

About 30 pages from KW's book left, and then next one in the queue is The Sleep Solution. From the recent conversation with one resident:

J: ... and did you sleep well ?
R: Yes, I always do.
J: What's the secret ?
R: Clean conscience.

Notice and acknowledge two groups within the AAD course (probably there's more): Mexico Guitar Circle & Rosario Guitar Circle.

Hmmm, why despite several crafties living in London, there are no circle activities there? Just wondering...

And the sky is beautiful today - fluffy white clouds on the sky-blue canvas.

My mum wrote she'll be going to Węgrzynów (the village she comes from) for three days tomorrow. Here's the bird view of it (google earth). Reportedly it's all covered with snow at the moment:

How many night staff out of 5 working tonight come from Poland ? - four... It's cold in the morning. We walk back through the stray after work, tired, but not too tired to miss the beauty of the frost on the green grass, and how it reflects the sun. There are some brown leaves spread around here and there too, the air is fresh and the sun is shining. Something to leave us wondering...

And meet M in the morning, bright and in good spirits after winning the battle with the bug!

The work with the first At-A-Distance Theme completes with bed today.

bug

Thursday, 27/11/08
North Yorkshire

A bug in the air. Marek said that 4 out of 9 chefs at his work were off sick, and the bug is still hungry for more, here, in this very flat, beware!

Ania came to her first nightshift after almost a month off. She showed me some pictures taken back in Poland. Snow, snow, snow. Really beautiful, she said she'll send me few of them, so I can post them here - yes, there's not enough white color on this page!

An email to an old teacher from the secondary school was sent today. It took quite a while to acknowledge what had to be acknowledged (well, over 9 years to be more precise).

Plough

25th/26th November 2008
WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY
Harrogate, England

Central event of the day - Extended Circle Project meeting hosted by the Vienna Circle (20.00-22.00 Austria Time). Participants: Alvaro, Barbara & Cristian (Spain) David (USA) Firat (Turkey) Gabriel (Brazil) Jacek (England) Heike, Poopak, Renate, Richard, Thomas & Wolfgang (Austria)

And my sister Ania arrived back in Yorkshire today after adventurous, but good travel.

On the way to the work see a spectacular view: only one part of a very dark and cloudy sky is clear and in it's very centre, with a remarkable clarity one can see the Plough. What a view! Almost as if the clouds were showing its respect to these 7 bright stars.

Research on Wikipedia for its English name was needed. Here's an excerpt:

In the British Isles this pattern is known as the Plough, although in Ireland the figure is sometimes called the Starry Plough and has been used as a political symbol. It is also occasionally referred to as the Butcher's Cleaver in northern England

It was formerly called by the old name Charles' Wain ("wain" meaning "wagon," and derived from the still older Carlswæn) as it still is in Scandinavia, Karlavagnen, Karlsvogna, or Karlsvognen. A folk etymology holds that it was named after Charlemagne, but this common Germanic name originally meant the men's wagon (the churls' wagon), in contrast to the women's wagon (the Little Dipper). Similarly, in Romanian and most Slavic languages it is known as "the Great Wagon", as opposed to "the Small Wagon," the Little Dipper. In German it is called Großer Wagen (Great Cart). An older Odin's Wain may lie behind these northern concepts..

TUESDAY 25th November
Harrogate, England

It's 10.25 am and the sun is still low enough not to be covered by these dark clouds hanging above the town. This room is on the sunny side of the building ...

A very welcomed email from my cousin's daughter Kasia arrived today, and there are also pictures from her recent visit to Paris attached.

And Marek informed that Harrogate was built on the old volcano, hmmm.

It'a a cold day, but not cold enough and not windy enough to prevent us from having a walk around the town. Some of the coulour combinations are just spectacular, especially at the bottom of the Coldbath road.

GC AAD Theme one (sequence 1) is underway.

ECP is moving into its last phase.

evening-evening

SUNDAY/MONDAY
23rd/24th November 2008

A completely different sense at the end of the day shift/beginning of the night shift (20.00). When we arrive the day team sits together, collected - unlike usually, when people are rushing away to get out of the place as soon as possible. It's beautiful, and happens seldom here...

And after work E needs somebody to help her move her newly acquinted sofa bed from the shop, to her apartment. G&J help with this, and one of them even gets the chairs she doesn't need and gladly gives away - useful!

A cloudy day, bit cold, also, but not much wind, at least ...

AAD Theme work is now on.

crunch crunch

SATURDAY/SUNDAY
22nd/23rd November 2008

On the next morning (after night shift) the ground is covered with some fine ice, it will melt quickly, and melts immediately when you tread on it. So a lot of crunchy sound when you are walking ...

And the Churchbells are just ringing - variations on the 6 notes. The sky is mostly clouded, but the sun manages to find its way through and offer its beams. There are not that many cars on the road as it's Sunday. And the birds are singing outside (must be those who don't have their Sunday morning lie-in today)

...

I think that crunch crunch can be translated as skrzyp skrzyp into Polish...

...

Marek suggests having the Practice of Doing Nothing together this morning. Sounds like the right thing at the right time!

clouds

FRIDAY 21st November 2008

A sunny day with a clear air and sky so far. Is it really the end of November in North Yorkshire ?

...

In the afternoon it gets more and more cloudy, and finally, the sky is completely covered with them. The rain starts falling, and even snow for a little while, but it quickly melts away, as it usually does here.

...

And in the evening the sky is overwhelmingly dark, some ominous black clouds out there. If we were not in the lit town, it would be pitch black, for sure.

A visited friend prepared some traditional, quite unusual food I just have to describe here - TATAR: it's a very finely minced raw loin, mixed with chopped pickled cucumber and onions. On top of this you put a raw egg, plus some basic spices, and mix it all together. You usually have it with a shot of vodka, as we did... Excellent treat.

And in the morning next day the sun is out again and the day came the full circle. My mother wrote it's cold and it's snowing in Poland today.

Spontaneity

Tuesday, 18th November
Harrogate, England

Up. It's dark outside - oh no, is it already past 16-ish ? No! It's just before 7 o'clock, and I can't fall asleep. After a bit of tossing and turning decide to relax with a bath, and take it from there. Get on with the flow ...

So... sit first. What a luxury to do it in the morning. Straight after this spend one hour with the guitar, sitting in front of the window and the sunny sky. Hurray!

Here's what happened:

Acknowledge two ongoing projects (ECP & AAD).

Prepare the body. I do nothing, before moving to do something  (move the left hand to the guitar)

Keep pausing every 15 min (ROTL exercise).

THE FIRST PRIMARY:

Pick up where I ended yesterday. 1234 permutation.

Metronome at 63

Quarter notes on D&A strings.

Quarter note triplets.

Eighth notes - extend to the inner 4 strings.

The focus is on effortlesness (Principles ...)

16th notes.

16th notes quintuplets.

8th triplets alternated with 16th triplets.

Gradualy slow down to complete ... until the quarter notes.

DEVELOPING VARIATIONS

PLAY

I bring the chair used for the practice back in the living room, where actually Marek is having his morning Practice of Doing Nothing. I join in.

What a wonderful beginning of the day so far. After having a breakfast together I spend little time with J.S.Bach pieces and then we are off to the health club, it's about 20 minutes walk ... We have some workout at the gym, use the sauna, the swimming pool & the steam room. All excellent, that's what I needed. Very good to be there with my friend and flatmate. I/we will come back, having a free 10 days pass - courtesy of Belen!

After this we walk home, chill out, have lunch, chill out ... JOTD. Then I'm off for a nap before the night shift. 3 hours of a very deep sleep, actually, almost oversleep, but am woken up just in time.

8 p.m. - 8 a.m. At work.

After this - catching up.

10.49 a.m.

Underway

Get up at 17.40, can life get more insane than this ?

18:17 AAD exercise.

I made two phonecalls today. One home and one to a birhday boy in Tychy. And there were more reconnections in the past few days, repercussion of the AAD course.

Here are some guitar practice notes (2 x 30 min):

Acknowledge this practice as part of the group work.

THE FIRST PRIMARY:

The first intentional note of this course is an E - I inhibit playing it while observing what tensions arise with the thought of bringing the left hand to the neck of guitar. Let go of the tensions.

Work on the 1234 pattern in 'the position of readiness'.

Metronome is at 60.

Begin with the half notes on A string. Insert an empty A string after the 4th note of the pattern, to pay closer attention to the quality of the simultaneous release, so it's a 5 notes pattern now.

Extend it to D string (10 notes pattern now)

Let go of the empty strings (8 notes)

Speed up. Quarter notes.

Quarter notes triplets. Listen carefully to the rhythm created by the metronome and the guitar.

Eighth, quarter, half notes. Complete.

Practice carefully, to set the good foundations for the following weeks of work.

FRETBOARD KNOWLEDGE:

Familiarize with the notes and fingerings of the C major pentatonic scale in the first 3 octaves. Work in various speeds (72bpm)

What else today ? A lot of catching up. Not that I like to do it, but do anyway. Sometimes it's like this. But I manage to read more from that mind-blowing KW's book. Will go to bed earlier tonight, to get up at noon and see some sun, wow.

3.35 am now

more

Sunday the 16th of November

Up in the afternoon. The PoDN at 16.03.

I have my dinner (pardon me, breakfast!) It takes a little while to cook the fish (in the oven, wrapped in foil) and Marek makes few suggestion what to add with it and provides with a very flavoursome sauce for it with magic ingredient. This and cooked carrots make a delicious meal.

There's an Extended Circle Meeting held between 17.30 & 19.30 tonight. One of the things worked on:

Eye of the Needle bass count. Metronome is at 63 (later on moved to 60, as it worked better)

First descending line (13 bars of 4) Work without guitar - clapping.

The approach I take tonight is to focus on individual bars of the line first.

For example:

loop the bar 7 (with the 1st note of the line on the count of 7-3)
loop the bar 8 (with the 2nd note of the line on the count 8-2)

loop bars 7 & 8 together, integrating the rhythm in the body. The body is relaxed.

Loop the bar 9 (with the 3rd & 4th note of the line on the count of 9-1 & 9-3 )

Loop the bar 8 & 9
Loop the bars 7, 8 & 9

and so on...

When the line is complete, practice with and without counting.

...

Then work on the next 13 bars of 4 (3 notes)

At the end work on the first 26 bars of the piece.

A very quiet night at work follows. I also sense the AAD course, have a strong feel for this one.

At home. I'm tired. Although I plan to formally begin in the evening, I can't help, but sit down and acknowledge the process no doubt already underway.

more soon

Sunday, 16th November

After the night shift - off to bed shortly.

It's 33:16 (or 9:16 if you like) now.

More soon...

Processes

Saturday, 15th November

A day of usual commitments.

An access to the AAD website was given today, so I spent some time browsing through it. Especially the 'participants & staff' section. Read the applications, write down the names of the participants with their locations etc.

Also receive an email from the Vienna office, it is time to review our aims for this ECP project (http://www.guitarcirclevienna.at/aad.html) and perhaps redefine if needed.

The question I inevitably asked myself: will I be able to honour these two AAD commitments ? Not going to be easy, for sure, but possible, and I am actually very excited about both.

I also take some time to look at important areas of my life and what is needed. I actually take the piece of paper and write them down, without much analyzing it, really: family, GC practice, health, current job, professional development & relationship. Interesting, I'm immediately struck by how interrelated all these are.

And here's the report from today's guitar practice, as committed to:

Begin with the relaxation exercise without the guitar.

Put the guitar on. Relax into the floor and accept its support.

Tune the instrument.

2 x 30 min of the right hand, metronome at 72 BPM:

First half (2nd Primary)

Whole, quarter, eighth notes.

At the end of it introduce the exercise of divided attention:

- 8th notes alternate picking. Change the string every 2 bars of 4.
- count aloud
- feet tap pattern in time with the metronome: Left Right Right

Second half (4th Primary) - The Third Relation preparatory exercise:

Eighth notes, gradually extending to 16th notes.

Complete with adding the chords on, then play the intro of the piece.

COMMENTS:

I pause every 15 minutes, to step back and observe. I may forget the connection with the floor, but then the pause reminds me of it again and allows to reangage with the body and relax.

Key words for this one hour practice: pause - attention - relaxation.

And something that perhaps may seem very obvious: I noticed that the reason for not being able to perform this DA exercise, was that I didn't really direct my attention to the feet pattern. Once I did, something became possible. So simple, and obvious, yet quite a revelation.

Nocturnal

Friday, 14th November

Here's a journal entry for today. I got up at 20.27, which is quite late, but had a good sleep after the night shift. I make myself a cup of tea then retreat back into my room.

The PoDN. Good preparation which leads straight into 30 minutes with guitar. Here's a brief report to share:

Relax into myself.

Relax into the environment.

Relax into the guitar.

Set the metronome at 72 BPM.

Practice the 1st Primary: 1324 pattern (ascending the fretboard) 4231 (descending)
Work on the 4 inner strings, between 1st and 13th fret.

Quarter, eighth, eighth triplets & sixteenth notes.

Observe what tensions arise in the body when I change the speed, and let them go.

When reach sixteenth notes limit the working area (from 3rd until 11th fret) and multiply individual notes of the pattern. For example:

2 2 2 2 - repeat first note 2 twice, second note twice etc.

then...

2 1 2 1
3 3 3 3
3 3 3 2

Also approach 5 notes per beat.

Complete with the 'Music for the found harmonium'.

-------

Later I join Marek and Belen in the living room and have a cup of coffee. Marek offers some mushroom soup, very nice and flavoursome. We go out for a walk around Harrogate, it's a full moon tonight, it's windy and the air is fresh. It is also Friday night -> many people around enjoying their night out. After this I go to the shop on my own.

Another picture from the Yorkshire Dales. That's how the day looks like:

Night animal is free to do its night business when everybody else is asleep as every normal person does. This includes: chi kung, JoTD, reading from KW's book, meal.

Also guitar time II, briefly reported here:

Prepare with the Alexander lie-down.

J.S.Bach repertoire:

Review first 20 bars of Prelude VI, then learn bars 21-24. Use visualization technique.

G gigue

d courrante

Play. A groove comes up, then another one. I play around them and record on mac. Have a lot of fun with it!

Check the watch, almost 50 minutes.

-------

Short sitting. Then take it easy and watch The Cable Guy .

13th November - resonate

The mobile I take pictures with is broken at the moment, but here are few old pictures (from a visit to Yorkshire Dales with my sister last year) to bright up this page!:

Wake up at 17.27 which gives enough time for the PoDN, an email check with a cup of coffee and a visit to the shop, before going for the night shift. Fine!

At the end of the night shift I remember my father who assisted by my sister must be now preparing/traveling to the Mikołów hospital to stay at the rehabilitation unit. This is good news!

After work, do pretty much usual stuff, plus 30 minutes of guitar:

Begin with a relaxation exercise without the instrument.

Then relax into: holding the the guitar ... tuning ... the position of readiness of the right hand ... metronome ... first note.

Today I practice all strings cross-picking exercise the Vienna Circle worked with recently. I was inspired after reading its description on Richard's journal.

The metronome is at 80 BPM. Practice one note every:

2 beats
1.5 beat
1 beat
1.5 beat
2 beats
4 beats

Play the last round without the metronome and complete with all strings chord. I play it few times allowing notes to ring, and listen ...

Comments:

About 20 minutes into the practice there's a sound of incoming email. I say stop to the impulse of checking it.

This session was exactly what I needed, still, it required some effort. This therapeutic aspect of guitar practice was very much at work today.

I acknowledged the Vienna Team and the larger GC circle - this was very supportive.

And from the AAD course application sent tomorrow:

My prime aim is to do what is needed.

The other aims are:

- to deepen the healthy & playful relationship with the guitar and to learn from it.
- to make a good use of the learning opportunities the course provides.
- to prepare for the changes in my personal life and prepare for the OCG Course in February in Spain.

It's 11.43 am. Soon to sleep...

Thursday, 13 November 2008

12th November- positively tired

Wake up at 16.52 this afternoon, hard to get going today. One thing for sure - it feels against the natural flow of the day to go on like this: day sleep and night work. There's a text message on my mobile prompting to answer immediately, but it's not that urgent actually, and can wait until I do the sitting exercise.

And there's a book on the table, finally arrived today, strongly recommended some time ago. After having a cup of tea and urgent emails I sit down to practice guitar. I'm short on time on the days like these, between nightshifts, but 30 minutes is possible today and I go for it.

Here's the report to share:

18:12 - prepare with the relaxation exercise.

18.15 - begin with the instrument.

Tuning.

Relax into the first intentional note of the week, then:

Third Relation preparatory exercise (for the right hand).

The metronome is at 72 BPM. Gradually build up the speed: quarter notes, eigth notes, sixteenth notes.

18.30 - pause and sit still to support relaxation.

Next strap the chords on and play around them. Also play the first 8 bars of the piece few times.

Attention is in the body, give permission for the noticed tensions to go. There are tensions in the arms, once they go I notice the tensions in the feet, accumulated during the night shift yesterday. So this relaxation process is gradual, and these are only the bodily tensions!

18.45 - complete.

Comments:

I exercise relaxation in activity, with guitar, and it almost seems like an extension of the sitting. Still, a different context for the work of body discipline, and a very informative and useful one ...

The joy of practice! - it's hard for me to describe in words.

-------

After this I have my meal, sharing the living room with Marek and Belen. B. is browsing Polish-English dictionary, learning how to pronounce Polish words, brave move!

Off to work for a night shift (8pm-8am). In the morning I set up laptop and play the Hymns cd to set the tone for the day. The residents do respond strongly to them:

Abide with me:

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

And a most wonderful sunset this morning, with various shades of red, purple & pink that beautifully harmonize with the colours of the tree & buildings. What a beginning of the day!

After work: emails & JOTD. I send an application letter for the AAD course - so excited about it! Right move, as they say, life changes and becomes easier when you make the decision.

Wow, it's already late and I sill have to get some sleep before night shift tomorrow. I'm positively tired...

Now for sitting, it's 10.22 am

Wednesday, 12 November 2008

11th November - transition

A most wonderful day to pause and relax, before 'putting the heat on' again for the next week. Batteries recharged!

Despite all the miserable weather of the last few days it's good to be back here in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. I'm in the good company and feel good here!

The weather since I've come here has been rainy and cold, with some occasional killer wind. But the Christmas decorations & lights in the town make a difference and bright the space up in those gloomy days. And the oranges smell reminds me of Christmas. They do smell differently during this time of year.

In the afternoon I have the sense of having enough rest and already moving into 'on mode', almost as if kind of practice gravity made me move on - this I recognize as a good sign, however, I do not respond to it, sticking rigidly to my plan of break. Not a big harm done, but in a way, a missed opportunity. Would it not be an example of damping the spontaneous arising then ? So there we go - life experience keeps providing with the learning opportunities...

Apart from relaxing and getting some rest I also do the night shift (8 to 8). It goes well. But before work we had gone shopping with Marek. I got some rocket and oranges, which M. recommended to use with the fennel, so I got one and had this salad at work later and boy, was it not delicious!

And an interesting quotation from the book (Vayeze's book on G.I.G. teaching) I picked up today:

... but all this accumulated information, these experiences and conclusions drawn from them, belong to other people. For us, all this is theoretical. We may perhaps believe it insofar as it does not conflict with our experience or with ideas we have already acquired; but, in fact, the conclusions of other can really convince us only to the extent that we discover them again for ourselves. Books can help guide our experience, but we can never be sure exept of that which we have verified and lived through ourselves...

After work have shower, and spen some time at the computer. I contact the GC office to inquire about the upcoming At-A-Distance course that begins on Monday, not much time left. It's going to be a short one, but feels like a very good one with a lot on offer. I need it! Hmm, wants, likes, wishes, needs etc. No doubt about this one!

Also call my sister in Poland and update on news. Basically, things are good, but haven't moved on to the next stage yet.

To bed soon, it's 9.52 am, but first the sitting.

Ah, and something I couldn't only keep to myself: we watched the movie recently: The Revenge of the Drunken Master. The storyline taken from the cover goes like this: Accidentally discovering the operations of the blood ninja gangsters, a mischievous young man masters the skills of the drunk first and proceeds to fight against them. But the gangsters join forces, vowing to kill him before the young master destroys them all.

And he did! But for me there was too much talk, they could have beaten each other more instead!

9th November and a bit and the wheel that keeps turning

Wake up on this Sunday at 12 o'clock. Sitting first, the foundation (12.18-12.53)

A long day, not going into details of this now as my brain is nearly fried after 12 hours shift. at 11.10 am all I had to do before calling it a day is done. While having a cup of tea with Marek, we find out that we were both going to have sitting now - we practice together (11.30-12.00)

And tomorrow, that is today after having some sleep, is a day for rest (really!)

Well, two things I have to mention about from today: the Extended Circle Project AAD meeting was held between 17.30 & 19.30 (UK time) and I completed the first study period of the Applied Reading Circle.

Sunday, 9 November 2008

8th November and celebrations

Get up at 17.15 and quickly leave to the shop that closes in 15 minutes (tomorrow is Sunday!) to get the missing string, then sitting (17.27-18.03)

After this I leave to visit friends to celebrate the new arrival!

JOTD is between 4.28 & 5.11. I translated an excerpt from The Art of Craft into Polish. Here's a part of it:

Guitar Craft to trzy rzeczy:

1. Sposób rozwinięcia związku z gitarą;

2. Sposób rozwinięcia związku z muzyką;

3. Sposób rozwinięcia związku z samym sobą.

Two expressions I found tricky to express in Polish language: response & applying intention. Still, I did my best.

Saturday, 8 November 2008

7th November and a bit more

On and off sleep during the day. I eventually wake up at 16.20 and decide to get up. I feel rested, how is it possible, after such a long day yesterday and short sleep ? I find mechanics of sleep fascinating.

I sit between 16:42 & 17:27

Then join Marek, Belen and her brother Jesus and girlfriend Isa in the living room. Marek offers me some spring rolls for dinner/breakfast (!) with a special mango & passion fruit sauce. We talk for some time. Then I use opportunity and practice guitar for half an hour, a luxury on a day like this. Before work we go with M to asda, and I get some food for the night.

Yes, the night shift is between 8pm & 8 am and for this time frame I also decide to work with the ROTL exercise, adds a different dimension to the job experience... What else ? My work rota was readjusted and I'm going to have a time off tomorrow. I was asked if I do mind? Yes, I do! But I'm not going to dwell on it too much, just use this situation to the advantage as best as I can...

And the comment from the nocturnal creature: getting out of the basement requires practice and intention. Coming back to the basement is so much easier, that's where the current goes. I'm wondering if this is an indication of where I am...

It's yet another cold and rainy morning in Yorkshire. Get the lift home again, have shower, and do several little jobs to make this day end on a more intentional note, for example, post this.

It's 9.26 a.m.

Friday, 7 November 2008

6th November - Mikołaj

It's 9.15 am on Friday when I start writing this, the end of a rather long day that began 'yesterday' at 10.52 am. I just wrote few urgent emails after having a nice and refreshing shower. It was actually raining outside on my way back from work, a kind of mini shower, but today one workmate gave me a lift home.

So it was a first shift at the care home home. It ended at 8 am. There's going to be more of them, 3 more in a row, then a day off and 3 more again. So quite a marathon really. I took these shifts over from a person who works very hard, but had to take time off - he was right in choosing his time of holidays, as today his son Mikołaj was born!

Before coming to work I had practiced guitar. I put the string on, and one of them broke, one of those 'disadvantage' situations. I practiced with full stomach, which didn't really interfere with it as I ate as much as needed, and not more. What had happened before this ? Jotd. I reflected on my commitments today and came to the conclusion that this exercise together with sitting and guitar are essentials for me at the moment.

Before this I had spent some more time at the computer after coming from the nearby supermarket - had to stock up on food. It was good to go out for a walk after spending some Mac time, but that was needed, really. Stuff, emails, catching up, including updating the journal report on our Monday guitar meeting with Marcin.

But before all this - the sitting, the pillar, today between 11.18 & 11.54

I think that waking up at 10.52 helped to get through the long night.

It's 9.35 am now, yes, it takes me long to write this journal! Time for bed now. The alarm is set for 17 o'clock ...

Thursday, 6 November 2008

5th November - move

A busy day of practicalities & traveling. Arrived in Harrogate at 00.08 am.

I leave Tychy with mixed feelings, and I haven't felt like this since moving out for the first time in 4 years. Clearly it's time to move on - it's the aim that helps to keep moving. My father has improved a lot in the past 6 weeks, he keeps regaining his independence and this also makes him feel better. Another good news is that my sister is coming home tonight, actually, she's going to travel the same plane I'm going to take to Doncaster airport!

I also realized it was the longest stay in Poland since I left in 2004, and very informative and useful one. I have the sense of big shift here in Tychy, on many levels...

4th November is a 'day off'

3rd November - the peak

Early rise at 6.15, well, early for my standards. Today I'm less bothered with 4 hours sleep than with sleeping too much! I walk home. My mother is just getting ready for work and my father is still asleep. Morning sitting exercise.

In the morning I go the dentist. There's a little problem, as the gum is obstructing the access to part of tooth that needs treatment, so the gum has to be cut, using some little tool I haven't seen before. Ouch! After this I go to get the haircut, keep it simple this time - just short! 12mm length, no scissors, just using the electric machine. Ah, feel much better for it now.

I spend the rest of the afternoon at home, with my dad.

In the evening we have a guitar meeting with Marcin in Konfederatów Barskich flat. Here's the report:

We arrive early, have a cup of tea and begin on time.

20.00-20.40 Sitting.

Tuning.

20.55 - Callisthenics:

Marcin calls for the 1st primary practice. We decide to work on 1234 permutation when ascending the fretboard, until 12th fret, and then it's mirror 4321 permutation when descending.

Metronome at 60. Work at different speeds, changing it after every ascencion-descencion:

Quarter notes
8th notes
8th notes triplets (add the count of 4 bars of 4 with this one)
16th notes

Move to the right hand: 4th Primary:

Metronome at 65.

Begin with an empty A string. Half notes, quarter notes. Move to an E string.

Then we work on the following patterns, practicing in quarter notes.

AEEE
DEEE
GEEE

Practice these carefuly, without looking at the hand. We find the last one particularly challenging - 2 strings skip. We play series of them, repeating each of them 8 times, then 4 times, 2 times and finally play the following pattern:

AEEE DEEE GEEE DEEE

Gradually build up the speed: quarter notes -> eight notes -> sixteenth notes.

Add 3 chords in g minor. It moves towards music.

21.55 Break. We are full of energy after this session. For me the question comes up: how to manage this?

22.20 - Repertoire:

Introduce 28 bars.

Getting familiar with the positions of the chords first. We already know three of them from the previous session. Play with the thumb.

We gradually learn the chord progression (form), we count the bar numbers & look at the fingerings. When this is memorized move to the right hand:

Metronome at 65

Begin with 8 bass notes. We count & name them.

Add empty E string on the offbeat. Establish this picking pattern.

We apply the chords and practice the piece, counting 28 bars of 8. At one point we move to what is possible - just count the bars numbers.

Move on, and work in one position to establish the complete picking pattern.

Then we extend it to all bars. At the end we play it without the metronome (with 2nd guitar part). Honourably.

There is a sense of accomplishment after this diligent practice, while being aware there's a lot of work ahead on this piece.

23.20 - The meeting completes.

It was a good and intense practice. Clearly a new beginning! Now Marcin has to quickly leave for the last 23.35 bus. I walk with him to the bus stop.

Strong end of the week for me. Some stuff to be done before I hit the bed. It's 1.17 am now

2nd November - the wave

A late morning in the KB flat, again. Sitting.

A lovely day at home spent with my parents, there's a lot good food, including white borsch with dried wild mushrooms picked by my uncle and beans. We usually only have it for Christmas, an opening meal in our home, so for me, it's quite the treat, mmm. The weather is also fine, quite unusual as for this time of the year, warm with a light breeze, and there was some sun too.

In the evening there's the Extended Circle Project meeting. Here's a brief report:

The preparation for this meeting is the specific exercise in inhibition/sensation on the hour (between 12 & 18 o'clock) I arrive in the apartment where I practice around 16.30 to have more time to quiet down. This includes chi kung and AT lie-down.

Something changes this evening, as if the magnifying glass was put on everything I do, in a very good way. I was also very low on energy in the past few days, with regular headache, now it's all gone!

18.30 Begin formally, although the meeting clearly begun earlier.

I'm going to record 3 takes of the courante from the G suite during this meeting.

But first: the right hand.

Metronome at 65

Strings: DDAA
Feet : LRR (with the metronome)

Right hand: half notes, quarter notes (introduce feet), eighth notes, sixteenth notes.

After this is a good moment for the first take of the piece.

JOTD.

Second take of the piece - too fast.

Third take - slower.

The recording program is confusing and I'm unable to edit it and listen to the takes. The first one is actually gone! I think we are having a little problem with a sound engineer.

Lord's Prayer.

Relax, visualize the group.

I have the clear sense of completion at 20.25, but also complete formally with the Team at 20.30 It was very supportive to work with the group, and I'm very grateful for it.

-----------

After this leave straight home and then for a chat with Marcin and Jan. Very nice evening, and a long one too. We make plans with M. to meet with guitars tomorrow, at 20 o'clock.

Very late evening in the KBF. Stuff, including journals.

It's 1.17 am, now sitting and off to bed.

1st November - All Saints

Wake up in the KB flat after sleeping in as planned. Sitting & Chi Kung.

After getting ready for the day walk home, that's where I spend most of the day, and a good day it is. A family time.

Today is All Saints Day, a special time to acknowledge those who are no longer with us. It's probably the most busy time on Polish roads during the year, as people are visiting family graves, sometimes traveling long distances. The major part of our family is buried in Trzebnica, near Wrocław (Lower Silesia). That's the area where my parents had lived for a long time before moving to Tychy.

Jotd at home.

In the evening back to my space in the KBF. Stuff, including booking the return ticket to England for this Wednesday, Ania will be coming here on the same day!

Sitting.

I'm pleased to announce the winners in my Biggest Energy Waster competition that took place over the past two weeks (... drumsnare sound ... ) Two competitors were awarded the Statuette of the Energy Sucker October 2008: negative emotions & excessive talk. Well done, congratulations!
